pi'lo
Designer: Heather Shaw
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Makes: pillows, decor, gifts and things for little people
pi'lo began with a line of decorative pillows for big people but slowly added more and more things for little people to their catalogue as owner and designer Heather became a mother. Heather knew from an early age she would make a career in a creative field and makes her products from embroidery, screen printing, hand sewing, machine sewing and the occasional glue gun.
Heather studied fine art at Emily Carr in Vancouver and then switched coasts part way through her degree and studied textiles and ceramics in Halifax at NSCAD where she learned to weave, screen print and dye, processes well-suited to fulfill her love of making functional objects for the home.
All pi'lo products are made locally out of Heather's coach house studio, a renovated former sausage factory behind her home, where she also finds time to bake daily and look after her two small boys.
Pi'lo's designs are made primarily from natural materials that are either organic, recycled or sustainable. The paints used are low voc and many of the materials used in their products are found from nature itself (i.e. rocks from beaches, twigs from the park, shells from the beach). Pi'lo finds inspiration in both flights of fantasy and simple pleasures, like pebbles, nests, eggs, stars, spirals, thread, moss, mist, aprons, linen, fairies and black cats.
