Though she initially had little interest in textiles or working with fabric, Georgie's path to screenprinting began with a few classes at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and was solidified when she began to teach workshops at the makeshift screen-printing facilities of Seamrippers (a craft collective which she co-founded). She now creates her screenprinted t-shirts, scarves and accessories in a basement studio, working to the very loud sounds of some very dedicated punks that practice above her.

Georgie prefers to work with bleach (aka discharge paste - which removes the dye of the fabric) and pigments vs. traditional inks as it leaves her garments soft and less likely to fade or crack. She goes the extra mile to heat-set and wash each piece as she feels it makes a big difference to the print quality, which is important to her.

Georgie collects images and things compulsively that form the basis for her drawn and altered printed images. She is inspired by many things, among them the Victorians, nature and natural history, scientific illustration - modern and ancient, museum collections, contemporary craft, and textile art. The company name "Hand and Shadow" is the result of hours of torturous word play to come up with something old fashioned and sort of mysterious - like a title of a spine chilling Victorian novel.
