Maked
Designer: Carla Thomas
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Makes: Knitwear, clothing, accessories, and sometimes furniture
Carla works out of a small apartment with a tall ceiling, which gives her brain a lot of room to think. She explores a wide range of materials which include wood, leather, wool, linen, cotton, mohair, and employs sculptural processes in her work such as sculpting yarn, elasticizing fabric, and fabric origami. She comes from a very creative and handy family, which includes her sister Anna from the Loyal Loot Collective. Carla's accomplishments include winning the sixth annual Canadian Interiors Magazine Best of Canada Design Competition, and beating out all her unsuspecting male classmates in a school project to build the strongest yet lightest cardboard bridge design.
The name Maked (make+naked) emerged in 2004 from her love of making things and describes how exposed she felt selling her designs to the public for first time.
